PYTHON

YOUR FIRST PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE

Every Great Technical Artist Writes Tools That Work

Blueprints can take you far, but Python takes you deeper. In this term, you’ll learn to write your first real code using Python—a flexible, production-proven language used across studios to automate workflows, build tools, and extend DCC software like Maya, Blender, and Unreal.

You’ll start by understanding how computers think and how programming works under the hood. Then, you’ll apply Python to real-world problems: organizing files, processing assets, and writing your own cross-platform tools.

This term is all about building smart, reusable tools that solve production bottlenecks. Whether you’re batch-renaming game assets or exporting scenes from Maya, you’ll gain the skills to write code that saves time, reduces errors, and makes pipelines more efficient.

PERSONALIZED MENTORSHIP

At Vertex School, you’ll learn directly from Technical Artists and Pipeline Developers who use Python every day to solve production challenges at studios like CD Projekt Red, Meta, and Playground Games.

Your mentor will help you develop the mindset of a toolmaker—someone who can see a bottleneck and build a script to fix it. You’ll get personalized feedback on your code, UI design, debugging process, and tool functionality so you can write clean, efficient, and studio-ready Python scripts that actually get used in production.

STUDIO-LEVEL TOOLS AND WORKFLOWS

This term takes you out of the visual interface and into real-world code, giving you the power to automate and scale your work across Maya, Blender, Unreal Engine, and beyond.

You’ll write Python scripts to manage assets, batch-process files, and create your own custom pipeline tools. Along the way, you’ll learn how to read API documentation, use debugging tools, and build UI/UX that makes your tools easy for artists to use. These are the skills that separate good tech artists from great ones—and they’ll help you contribute to any studio from day one.

SKILLS YOU NEED BEFORE YOU START

To succeed in this term, you should have completed Terms I-IV of the Tech Art Program, or have the equivalent skills and knowledge. You’ll need a strong understanding of how tools and systems function inside Unreal Engine, as well as experience thinking logically and solving problems through visual scripting or procedural workflows.

This term shifts your focus from node-based systems to real scripting, teaching you how to write code that interacts with file systems, DCC applications, and even Unreal itself. You’ll begin building tools that solve real-world production challenges across multiple platforms.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

In Term V, you’ll learn Python from the ground up—not just as a programming language, but as a toolmaking superpower. You’ll develop practical skills that let you automate, organize, and scale production processes across Maya, Blender, Unreal Engine, and beyond. In this course, you will:

  • Learn the fundamentals of computer science, scripting logic, and how Python interacts with files, memory, and environments

  • Write Python scripts to automate asset management, including folder creation, batch renaming, and pattern matching

  • Use Python in Maya and Blender to streamline import/export workflows and extend DCC functionality

  • Build your first production-ready tool with a working UI—designed to solve a real-world task

  • Learn how to read documentation, debug errors, and create scripts that are reliable and user-friendly

  • Understand cross-platform tool integration and how to make your tools usable in multiple software environments

By the end of this term, you’ll have created a standalone or DCC-integrated Python tool that automates a real production task—proving you’re not just a tech artist who can use tools, but one who can build them.
