BLUEPRINTS
YOUR INTRODUCTION TO PROGRAMMING
Every Great Technical Artist Understands Gameplay Logic
Before you can build tools, connect systems, or script gameplay mechanics, you need to learn how game engines think. In this term, you’ll learn the foundations of programming using Unreal Engine’s Blueprint system—a visual scripting language used in real games across the industry.
You’ll create interactive prototypes, master core concepts like logic flow, events, and variables, and build a playable experience from start to finish. This course lays the groundwork for deeper scripting and technical systems work—teaching you to think like a programmer, without needing to write code (yet).

PERSONALIZED MENTORSHIP
At Vertex School, you’ll learn directly from professionals who build systems, tools, and gameplay mechanics at top studios like CD Projekt Red, Meta, and Playground Games.
Your mentor will guide you through the world of Blueprints and visual scripting, sharing best practices, real production insights, and the technical thinking studios look for in a strong Technical Artist. Through weekly feedback and live sessions, you’ll get support on your prototype, sharpen your logic and problem-solving skills, and gain confidence in building functional, interactive systems.
STUDIO-LEVEL TOOLS AND WORKFLOWS
We train our students to think and build like developers from day one. In this term, you’ll work inside Unreal Engine, learning to create gameplay systems using the same Blueprint tools used in real production.
You’ll follow studio-relevant workflows to build triggers, UI elements, reusable components, and interactive gameplay logic—all while learning to debug and design with clarity. This hands-on training gives you the technical foundation to confidently contribute to game teams in later terms and in your future career.

SKILLS YOU NEED BEFORE YOU START
To succeed in this term, you’ll need the skills covered in Term I: Game Art Basics. That includes a solid understanding of how 3D assets are created, prepared, and brought into real-time engines. If you've completed Term I, you're ready to dive into visual scripting and begin thinking like a programmer.
This course builds on your foundational game art knowledge and transitions you into the world of gameplay systems, logic, and interaction—from an accessible, artist-friendly perspective.
WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
In Term II, you’ll explore how technical artists use Unreal Engine’s Blueprint system to create tools, prototype mechanics, and support teams across disciplines. You’ll build a working knowledge of logic flow, data handling, interactivity, and gameplay systems—and apply it all by developing a fully playable prototype. In this course, you will:
-
Learn the core concepts of programming through visual scripting, including variables, functions, loops, and conditionals
-
Understand Unreal’s gameplay architecture and how to structure systems with Actors, Components, and Interfaces
-
Create interactive elements like doors, switches, pickups, and UI systems
-
Build communication systems using Event Dispatchers and Blueprint Interfaces
-
Design and script a game loop with input handling, objectives, and feedback
-
Complete a capstone prototype that includes interactivity, functionality, and a clear win/loss condition
By the end of this term, you'll not only understand how gameplay systems are built—you’ll have created one yourself.
