ADVANCED UNREAL CONCEPTS
TOOLS FOR CREATING WORLDS
Every Great Technical Artist Multiplies the Power of a Team
Technical Artists aren’t just problem-solvers—they’re toolmakers. In this term, you’ll learn how to build editor tools, procedural systems, and performance workflows that streamline production and empower teams to create more with less.
You’ll master Unreal Engine’s Construction Scripts, Editor Utility Widgets, PCG (Procedural Content Generation), and optimization tools—and use them to build a small, stylized world. This isn’t just about building environments—it’s about creating scalable systems that make content creation faster, more flexible, and production-ready.
This term gives you the skills to turn repetitive tasks into automated solutions, build tools that support artists and designers, and understand performance like a pro.

PERSONALIZED MENTORSHIP
At Vertex School, you’ll work directly with seasoned Technical Artists who build tools and pipelines at studios like CD Projekt Red, Meta, and Playground Games.
Your mentor will help you think like a systems designer and a pipeline engineer, guiding you through the logic behind procedural tools, editor scripting, and performance profiling. Through live sessions and weekly feedback, you’ll get expert input as you build world-generation tools and optimize your scenes, all while learning what makes a Technical Artist truly valuable in production.
STUDIO-LEVEL TOOLS ANDÂ WORKFLOWS
In this term, you’ll dive into Unreal Engine’s advanced toolset, including Construction Scripts, Editor Utility Widgets, Nanite, Lumen, Virtual Shadow Maps, and PCG.
You’ll build your own tooling systems and procedural content workflows, just like the tools used in AAA games for level design, worldbuilding, and environment optimization. Along the way, you’ll learn to automate complex processes, support content teams, and ensure everything you build runs efficiently in real-time. This is the kind of behind-the-scenes tech work that transforms pipelines and elevates entire teams.

SKILLS YOU NEED BEFORE YOU START
To succeed in this term, you should have completed terms I-III of the Tech Art Program or have equivalent skills and knowledge. You’ll need a solid understanding of how Unreal Engine works, experience building real-time assets, and foundational knowledge of visual scripting, material creation, and performance basics.
This term shifts your focus from building visuals to building systems, turning manual processes into scalable workflows. You’ll learn how to create procedural tools, automate worldbuilding, and optimize environments for real-time performance.
WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
In Term IV, you’ll unlock the full power of tool development and procedural workflows inside Unreal Engine. This course focuses on making you more than just a content creator—it teaches you how to support full production pipelines through automation, efficiency, and technical design. In this course, you will:
-
Create Blueprint-based tools using Construction Scripts, splines, and randomization systems
-
Build Editor Utility Widgets to modify actors, automate workflows, and improve level design tools
-
Use Unreal’s Procedural Content Generation (PCG) framework to place assets and structure worlds
-
Dive into Nanite, Lumen, and Virtual Shadow Maps to understand next-gen rendering pipelines
-
Profile and optimize environments using Unreal Insights and performance view modes
-
Develop tools and workflows that support scalability, modularity, and clean world-building pipelines
By the end of this term, you’ll have created a small procedural world using your own custom tools—demonstrating not just technical knowledge, but the ability to multiply the impact of an entire team.
