ADVANCED PROCEDURAL CONTENT GENERATION

UNLOCK SCALABILITY. MASTER HOUDINI.

Build the Tools That Power Real-Time Worlds

You’ve built shaders, tools, and gameplay systems - now it’s time to bring it all together through procedural content creation. In this final term, you’ll learn Houdini, the industry-standard tool for generating scalable assets, environments, and systems used in AAA game development. You’ll work like a real production Technical Artist, creating a Houdini-powered toolkit that integrates directly with Unreal Engine.

This isn’t just about learning new software; it’s about solving real-world challenges. Whether you’re generating rivers, roads, terrain, or entire biomes, you’ll use everything you’ve learned, from Blueprints to Python, to design smart, reusable systems that support performance and creative flexibility. By the end, you’ll have a polished, portfolio-ready toolkit that proves you’re ready for production.

AAA WORKFLOWS FOR PROCEDURAL WORLD BUILDING

This term centers around Houdini and its deep integration with Unreal Engine. You’ll work with Houdini Digital Assets (HDAs), procedural scattering systems, dynamic terrain generation, and automation tools—all aimed at helping teams create more with less.

You’ll also dive into advanced topics like tri-planar mapping, heightfield-based biomes, and Python automation for exporting, optimizing, and streamlining workflows. Every decision—from exposed parameters to performance profiling—is made with a real studio in mind.

SKILLS YOU NEED BEFORE YOU START

To succeed in this term, you should have completed Terms I–V of the Tech Art Program or have equivalent experience in Unreal Engine, shaders, Blueprints, Python, and procedural content workflows. No prior Houdini experience is required, but a solid technical foundation and a problem-solving mindset are essential.

This is a project-driven term. You’ll be expected to scope, manage, and execute an ambitious toolkit while receiving mentor support and weekly feedback to keep you on track.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

In Term VI, you’ll become fluent in proceduralism and Houdini’s node-based workflow while building a custom environment toolkit that integrates with Unreal Engine. You will:

  • Learn how Houdini Digital Assets (HDAs) interface with Unreal through Houdini Engine

  • Build procedural systems that generate terrain, rivers, roads, biomes, buildings, or assets

  • Expose useful parameters and create intuitive UI controls for artists or designers

  • Use Python to automate tasks, build shelf tools, or handle bulk asset workflows

  • Optimize your toolset for performance, usability, and real-time rendering

  • Document and present your toolkit as a professional portfolio piece

By the end of this term, you’ll deliver a polished procedural content system that showcases your ability to solve complex, production-level challenges using Houdini and Unreal. This is the final step: from learning workflows to building them, and from student to real-time Technical Artist.
