What You’ll Learn

The course will go through the full process of modeling and sculpting. Addressing how to apply practical workflows to create a game-ready character, from start to finish. The emphasis throughout the course will be on addressing the nuances of forms, structures, workflow, detailing, imperfections, concept direction, and presentation. Students will learn how to get the most out of the various tools to get the best results.

This workshop on Character Creation will consist of ten  live lessons. You’ll learn core character design skills and workflows and be part of a community of artists working to achieve next level quality in their work.

By the end of the workshop you'll:

  • Have developed a fluency in the various stages of the PBR workflow.
  • Know how to create dynamic poses for your character.
  • Have mastered the pipeline for 3D character creation.
  • Have created your own game-ready character..

ASSIGNMENT:   Due each week. Expect to spend 10-20 hrs/wk viewing lectures, q&a, and time on assignments

MATERIALS:   Photoshop, ZBrush and 3D packages such as Maya, 3Dsmax, Modo, or else should be known to follow along

PREREQUISITES:   Knowledge of ZBrush and 3D Software Packages

Curriculum

Week 1

Proportions & Concepts

Reduce decision making. Set expectations and concept. Update the proportions based on our needs and block out shapes.

Week 2

Armors & Blockout

Block out the base model for armors and accessories based on the concept without going into details.

Week 3-4

Marvelous Patterns

Establishing marvelous designer patterns, mostly primary shapes and secondary shapes inside marvelous designer. Preparing marvelous patterns in zbrush and for sculpting.

Week 4

Marvelous Patterns

Establishing marvelous designer patterns, mostly primary shapes and secondary shapes inside marvelous designer. Preparing marvelous patterns in zbrush and for sculpting.

Week 5

Sculpting Cloth

Hand sculpting folds, damage; Directionality; Tension.  Add smaller items to your Clothes, like Buckles and Patterning.

Week 6

Detailing

Wrinkles & Pores details; Micro details; ZBrush layers, Imperfections. 

Week 7

Creating Our Game Ready Mesh

Retopologize your Mesh. UV your Character and Define Texture Sets.  

Week 8-9

Texturing

Preparing the character to texture in Substance Painter. Base Materials done for every item of Clothing or Armor based on reference.

Week 9

 

Lighting & Presentation

Basic Lighting Theory. Designing Lighting Styles Specific To Your Project.          Pose your Character. Bring all of your Elements to life

Siamak Roshani

Siamak Roshani is a self-taught artist with over 17 years of experience working in the game industry, toys, film, and VFX.  Siamak has worked for over 15 different studios as a fulltime and freelance artist. Siamak has worked at Ubisoft as a senior character artist and in 2016 joined sledgehammer to work on call of duty world war 2 as a senior character artist. Siamak most recent project was at Suckerpunch as a lead character artist on Ghost of Tsushima, Siamak implemented a new pipeline for the character art team.

Siamak will teach the basic knowledge about art and 3D Application, You'll learn how to create your own character from start to finish, Learn what studios need from artists and much more.
