Prop Modeling For Film & Games
Designing A Hero Prop, From Start To Finish
- Design Development For Film
- 3D Modeling For Film
- Texture Painting
- 3D Printing & Outputs
What You’ll Learn
The course will go through the full process of prop design for film and games, with the objective to prepare models for 3D printing. The emphasis will be on designing props with a focus on believability and manufacturing for film. You will learn how to get the most out of the various tools to get the best results.
By the end of the course, you will learn efficient and practical workflows to achieve quality and believable props for film and games. You will learn how to prepare files for 3D printing, and will gain knowledge on how to troubleshoot new problems or tasks.
This workshop on Prop Modeling will consist of six modules of supplemental pre-recorded lessons and live Q&A sessions. You’ll learn core design skills and workflows and be part of a community of artists working to achieve next level quality in their work.
By the end of the workshop you'll:
- Build a 3D prop from scratch that you can Render and 3D print for your portfolio.
- Renders that will reflect how we want the final real world product to look.

Curriculum
Week 1
Concept
The first week will be about finding your idea of what you'd like to make. This course is focusing on prop design but this can be lenient towards a piece of a costume as well.
Week 2
Design Development
Justify your concept. Create build breakdowns and multiple views describing how the prop would be made by the characters in the world it is from. Think about the technology and tools available to these people. How can you tell that story through the design of the prop?
Week 3
Low Poly & UVs
This week will be about creating the base for your prop with accurate and aesthetic proportions and clean topology and UVs.
Week 4
High Poly
We’ll divide our model up and sculpt in our high res detail. We’ll take advantage of our clean UVs to put accurate 3D surface noise into the high poly model appropriate for 3D printing.
Week 5
Texturing
Here we will bake our maps down from our high poly model and create some textures for our final renders that will reflect how we want the final real world product to look.
Week 6
Preparation & Rendering
Exporting and making parts ready for printing. We will also create a final render to provide our workshop team with material and final paint finish reference.
