10 WEEK LIVE, ONLINE SKILL-FOCUSED TRAINING FOR ARTISTS

Being able to create a reproduction of a real life subject is an essential ingredient to mastering a craft. Pushing the limits of character art is a surefire way of giving a portfolio that extra spark.

In this course, Ryan Kingslien will help you simplify that task by demonstrating proven strategies that he uses in production every day.

This Anatomy for Production course will consist of 10 weeks of LIVE demonstrations and reviews. You'll learn core game artist skills and be part of a community of artists all working to achieve next level quality in their work.

Most importantly, You'll learn how to leverage amazing software like ZBrush, and using professional workflows to add realism to your character art portfolio that will impress.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN:

In this course, you will have access to classes on character art taught by Hossein Diba, a master in 3D portraiture. You will learn how to sculpt a reproduction of a person to real life standards. Live lessons will be lead by Ryan Kingslien as your mentor.

Build a solid anatomical foundation.

Understand how to build a realistic facial features down to minute details.

Learn the proportional systems applied to character design.

Be able to visually dissect references to better reproduce desired characteristics.

WEEK 1

Choosing a Subject
  • Decide on the age, gender, and ethnicity of the model
  • Choose a real life character to base the portrait around
  • Find references for inspiration

WEEK 2

Sculpting Primary Shapes
  • Start a base sculpt of the face
  • Model the skull to fit the reference
  • Build neck muscles
  • Jaw and cheekbones

WEEK 3

Macro to Micro
  • Understand basic facial anatomy
  • Learn the most efficient use of poly count
  • Follow shadows on the reference to best understand shapes
 

WEEK 4

Secondary Shapes
  • Keeping muscle forms and flesh folds in mind
  • Adding noticeable wrinkles and scars
  • Eyes

WEEK 5

Skin Details
  • Skin variations
  • Minuscule Wrinkles

WEEK 6

Hair
  • Fibermesh vs Modeled hair
  • Hair and beards
  • Grooming
 

WEEK 7

Retopology, UVs, and Baking
  • Retopologize into low poly
  • Unwrap the UVs
  • Understand high to low baking to create normal maps

WEEK 8 & 9

Texture the Character
  • Export mesh and maps into Substance Painter
  • Understand the PBR workflow
  • Layer textures according to reference to create a realistic result

WEEK 10

Final Render
  • Export textures from Substance Painter
  • Render scene in Marmoset Toolbag
  • Set up post processing in Photoshop

Ryan Kingslien is CEO of the Game Art Institute, a master sculptor, and anatomy guru. Formerly, he worked at Pixologic as part of the team that made ZBrush such a powerful tool. Today, he's following his passion as a teacher, motivating his students to push their skills toward the next level and go after nothing less than a career in the studio of their dreams.

What if I miss a class? Can I download it later?
Yes, everything is recorded and downloadable.

How long do I have access to the material?
You have access to the course material for two weeks after the end of the course.  A total of 10 weeks.

How long are the live sessions?
The live sessions are between two and three hours long.

When do you get the downloads up?
We get the downloads of live sessions online about 24 to 48 hours after the live session ends.

How do I talk to the teacher?
You can talk freely during the class and also via the Workplace group and private forum.

Will I be able to ask questions?
Yes.

Are there demonstrations or lectures?
Yes. They will be live and recorded. All downloads will be in your course.
