Henry Kelly was born in Liverpool in 1991. He grew up in a rough area with un-diagnosed ADHD. For these reasons, he was permanently excluded from primary school in year 5 and again in secondary school in year 9. After being excluded from secondary school, he spent most of his time on his computer at home making 3D models and learning how to create assets.
Not knowing what he had to offer the world (considering his rough start), he joined the army where he spent four years serving as an Infantryman. After leaving the army, he floated from job to job always doing 3D art as a hobby. He took on a few freelance jobs where he created assets for several different games such as Dinosaur Battlegrounds VR & an unannounced Survival game.
After a while, he decided Game Art was for him, so he put his time & effort into learning and creating (from home). He put together a small portfolio and took it to Canterbury College UK where he showed his work and asked to join the course to get his diploma in Game Art. He was turned down due to a lack of qualifications, so he instead worked day and night from home teaching himself everything he needed to know, from how to use a game engine and set up lighting to having an advanced understanding of pipeline import workflow.
In 2015, he joined Gymcraft LLS where he worked as a Freelance Environment Artist. His job was to fix all vegetation and to improve FPS for a released game called FreeDriver VR. After working there six months, he was given the opportunity to work full time (on contract). After his first year at Gymcraft, he was promoted to Lead Environment Artist and took control of the art team and direction to ensure the best quality for the release of their game.
In 2016, he was made redundant from Gymcraft LLS and struggled to find a normal job. Working as an electrician's mate/apprentice, he realised he missed Game Art and tried to get back into it. Shortly after, he was diagnosed with severe ADHD which set in stone his choice to work as an Environment Artist in the game industry; because of his huge passion for game art and development, he could spend countless hours without getting bored or switching off (anyone who has ADHD knows how hard it is to concentrate). He applied around the world for jobs and had several Interviews with big studios such as Ubisoft, Avalanche, Sumo Digital and Playground Games.
Unfortunately, those studios were too far across the pond for Henry. Luckily, he landed an interview with Rebellion Developments where he now works full time. In his own words, "I love my work as an Environment Artist working on Exciting AAA Titles".
