What You’ll Learn

The course will go through the full process of designing Lighting for 3D games. The emphasis will be on applying theoretical knowledge in practical and efficient ways for various settings, interior, exterior and natural lighting, lighting for characters, and lighting using Unity, CryEngine and Unreal. Maria will demonstrate her own lighting approach and the workflow she uses from concept to game-ready.

Students will learn how to make smart choices from the moment they collect references to create their moodboard to time they finish their project.

 Learn how to apply the theories of stage and photographic lighting design in the digital world with one of the Industry’s leading artists, Maria Yue.

Maria will teach you the workflows for designing lighting specific to the demands of your scene or character.  You will learn all the steps in the pipeline and understand how to make effective and efficient design decisions.

By the end of the course you'll:

  • Understand how lighting can both serve the work as well as function as a visual element.
  • Understand how to design lighting for different scenarios.
  • Have mastered your way through the lighting workflow.
  • Have developed an understanding for how to design different lighting styles.

PRE-REQUISITES

Are familiar with the basic operation of UE5 (understand basic UI & how to set up an Unreal Project in local folders)

Have an understanding of how the layer system works in Photoshop

Maria Yue 

Maria is currently working at Sharkmob London, United Kingdom as a principal lighting artist.

Starting as a lighting artist for Far Cry 4 at Ubisoft Shanghai, Maria’s unique knowledge on stage design and photography benefit her career path, and have made her become a very well recognized video game lighting artist among AAA studios in Asia, Europe and North America.

On top of her full time job and teaching, Maria is always sharing her free lighting design notes through her personal website Maria & Lightbulbs.

Projects she's worked on include Far Cry 4 and Far Cry Primal (PC/ PS, Ubisoft Shanghai, China.), Robinson the Journey and Climb nordic DLC (PSVR/ Oclus, Crytek, Germany),  Star Citizen (PC, Cloud Imperium Games, Wilmslow, UK), Gears 4 (PC/ Xbox, Splash Damage, London, UK).She is currently working on an unannounced AAA title using UE5.
