Why Tech Art?

The bridge between art and technology

Technical Artists bring creative visions to life through tools, shaders and systems that make worlds run beautifully and efficiently. As games become more complex and visually stunning, studios increasingly rely on Technical Artists to solve problems, optimize performance and push visual boundaries.

Learning Technical Art opens doors to a wide range of roles across VFX, environment art and pipeline development, making it one of the most in-demand and rewarding careers in the industry.

Who it's for

Beginner-friendly, built for motivated learners

This program is specifically designed to teach the real-time 3D skills required to secure a career in technical art. We pair students with mentors who are industry professionals at places like Blizzard, Mob Entertainment and Meta.

Who is this program for?

  • Anyone who wants to pursue a career in Technical Art
  • No prerequisites: you'll get a pre-course to learn the basics of 3D software before the program starts
  • Best for those who are extremely motivated to succeed in Tech Art

Certification

When you complete the 12-month program, you'll receive an official Vertex School certificate showing you completed a program from an Unreal Authorized Training Center.

We're a higher quality, more affordable and up-to-date alternative to associate and bachelor's degree programs, which are often outdated by the time you finish them.

Curriculum

Four terms, four capstone projects

Students begin with foundational game art skills and environment art in Unreal Engine, then progress into mathematically grounded shader, graphics and programming concepts, and finish by applying them in production contexts. The program has a special focus on supporting Pipeline, Environment Art and Effects teams.

Program objectives

  • An overview of the Technical Art field and its best practices
  • Hands-on experience with Unreal Engine, Maya, Houdini and the Substance suite, including their tools and scripting languages
  • Industry standards and best practices, with a focus on building robust modern pipelines

Core skill development

Through targeted training and live sessions, you'll learn key skills in shaders and materials, procedural tools and real-time effects, and graduate prepared to work in industry-standard software like Maya, Houdini and Unreal Engine.

Term I12 weeks

Game Art Foundations

Intro to Game Art (skill building)

Establish an art foundation and understand how assets move from creation to engine.

Capstone: Game-Ready PropTake an asset through the full pipeline and present it in a portfolio-ready breakdown.
    Term II12 weeks

    Environment Art in Unreal Engine

Take your art skills into full game environments in Unreal Engine.

Shared with the Game Art Program's Environment Art track, so you learn alongside environment artists.

Why it matters for Tech ArtTechnical artists build the shaders, tools and systems that environment teams use every day. Understanding how environments are made first means you'll build tools that actually work for artists.
    Term III12 weeks

    Technical Art Fundamentals

Procedural Art & Shader Fundamentals (skill building)

Build the algorithmic and graphical foundation of shaders and real-time rendering.

Capstone: Shader or Procedural EffectDevelop a custom Unreal material, Shadertoy shader or Houdini HDA demonstrating multiple math-driven effects.
      Term IV12 weeks

      Advanced Technical Art & Tools

      Advanced Procedural Art (skill building)

Extend mathematical and algorithmic foundations into advanced production contexts across Unreal, Substance Designer and Houdini.

Capstone: Procedural Art Tool or Shader SystemCreate a production-ready tool or shader-driven system, such as a Niagara library or a Houdini terrain scatter tool.
        Program structure

        Live, mentored and hands-on

        Live sessions

4 hours of live, online sessions every week, split between two sessions for lectures and demonstrations.

        Weekly labs

Informal time with an instructor for one-on-one or small group feedback, questions and help with your projects.

        Office hours

Available on weekdays. Drop in any time to meet with an instructor or fellow student for feedback and help understanding the material.

        1-on-1 support

If you get stuck, you'll have access to one-on-one support sessions to help build your projects and answer your questions.

        Career services

                  Attendance and participation platforms

                  • Communication: the Vertex School Mighty Networks site is the primary communication platform
                  • Content delivery: Zoom is used for live, lab and recorded sessions
                  • Content library: program content is housed in Instructure/Canvas
                  Grading and evaluation

                  Two types of assignments

                  Skill-building assignments

Small, deadline-based projects that show you understand each topic. Meeting the deadline is 75% of each assignment's grade, and the remaining 25% is based on mastery of the skill. Turning work in on time usually means 100% for that assignment.

                  Project milestones

Checkpoints during capstone projects. They're more about honing your artistic eye and reaching the quality threshold, and tend to be more flexible. Capstone projects receive a completion grade at the end of the project.

                  Student expectations

Community, respect and doing the work

Being a tech artist is just like being any other artist. It's about community and respect.

                  General participation

                    Doing the work

Every topic comes with assignments, and you'll get feedback from mentors and peers while giving feedback too. Our mantra:

Post early. Post ugly. Post often.

Always post your work updates before you meet with your mentor or class. A mentor should never have to ask for your work. When in doubt: early is on time, on time is late, and late is unacceptable.

                    Community participation

You'll post work updates to your cohort channels, where peers can give feedback, and you'll give feedback on their work too. As artists, we grow stronger through both mentor and peer critique.
