Brett Briley Keeps It Simple

Dec 15, 2015

One of the key parts of Brett Briley's Game Arts Mentorship course is the idea of keeping it simple...

We have a lot of work to do as game artists. We model, texture, & render. In Film, those are entire departments. In Film, some one may ONLY texture paint... ONLY...

Games is much less linear, though, and artists need to be able to do multiple things.

So to really hone your skills you need to keep it simple and work on the small subtle nuances of modeling topology, texture maps, and materials/ rendering.

Below is a really great progression from Adam Portilla. The first image is his reference sheet. Brett picked number 4, the lantern, and while it might seem simple make sure you check out the final render by Adam. He really nails the subtleties of oil rubbed bronze.
