Learn The Introductory Pipeline for 3D Design

Seth Lamberton is a 3D Designer with a background in Painting and Architectural Design, and has 14 years experience in design development of sculpture, public art, playgrounds and installations with fine artists (e.g. Tom Otterness, Sarah Sze), collaborating with public art organizations internationally, with engineers at firms such as ARUP, with fine art foundries and fabricators (Polich Tallix, Walla Walla Foundry, Bollinger Atelier, Independent Casting, Digital Atelier)

Seth will teach the foundations of 2d drawing, 3d drawing, surface modeling and solid modeling in Rhino & Zbrush, giving students the tools to develop their own designs. Explore the potentials of drawing in UV space, including Rhino’s project curve.

What You’ll Learn

The course will go through the full process of importing and creating their own 2d concepts for designs. The emphasis will be on learning to use Rhino’s native tools for creating dimensioned, scaled and measured vector and raster drawings. Students will learn how to get the most out of the various tools to get the best results.

By the end of the course, students will learn the entire pipeline of 3D design, from start to finish. They should also have gained knowledge on how to troubleshoot new problems or tasks.

This workshop on 3D Designing will consist of six modules of pre-recorded  and live sessions. You’ll learn core 3D design skills and workflows and be part of a community of artists working to achieve next level quality in their work.

By the end of the workshop you'll:

  • Know the foundations of 2d drawing, 3d drawing, surface modeling and solid modeling in Rhino
  • Have methods to analyze and design for prototyping and production useing high density sculpture meshes imported from ZBrush
  • Know an Introduction to parametric modeling of rationalized free form surfaces in Grasshopper
  • Understanding the principles of freeform drawing in Rhino.

Sprints

1

Introducing Rhinoceros 3D

Exploring Rhino’s interface and tools, and learn some tips and tricks to optimize your workflow. Learn about decimation of mesh models in order to use Rhino's make2d command to create nurbs drawings of pre-existing models.

2

Design Visualization & Representation

We will talk about design visualization versus representation, and begin a workshop on projective drawing techniques of plan, section, elevation, isometric, axonometric and oblique drawings, and how these are used to develop and visualize designs. By the end of this week’s workshop, students will choose a concept to develop further through drawing.

3

3D Drawing Foundations

We discuss how to use custom construction planes to control your lines in space, how to create freeform surfaces with extrude, pipe, loft, sweep, and network surface tools, and introduce solid modeling with primitives, booleans, deformation and transformation tools, and cage editing.

4

3D Drawing Deep Dive

Concepts explored while drawing in UV space enable the digital sculptor to go beyond surface design into an integrated understanding of solid model 3d design for production.

5

Grasshopper Foundations for Visual Scripting and Parametric Design

This class introduces Rhino’s Grasshopper plugin, and gives the non-coder access to the foundations of visual scripting for automation and parametric design. We explore automating patterns within a surface and a method to develop a model with adaptive parameters.

6

Beyond Rhino

Go deeper into developing rich drawings for art and design proposals and communicating design intent to clients, engineers and specialized fabricators and foundries.
