Curriculum:
Below is an outline of topics and assignments that you will Eytan will be covering during class.
Week 1 - Introduction To The Job
What is a concept designer? How do you prepare for the job? Exercises to loosen up your creativity and begin developing your ideas. Your primary job this week will be to begin to find your "master reference" for the project.
Week 2 - Graphic Composition
Graphic composition is one of the most important aspects of creating art for film or game. During this week we create several black and white compositional thumbnails for review in class.
Week 3 - Blocking In Your 3D Model / Sketches
Once we've established a few black and white compositional studies it is time to begin to block out the 3D models. Eytan will use Modo but can use any software you are comfortable with.
Week 4 - Finding The Color Scheme
Using your "master reference", we'll look at ways to establish the basic mood and feeling for the piece and find the balance between the texture and the structure of our scene.
Week 5 - Painting Specific Elements
In this week, we'll begin to really focus on elements that help sell the painting. It could be a Viking in a boat or it could be a particular mountain top. Using photos and hand painting you'll fit establish one or more key elements in your painting and balance the right amount of detail.
Week 6 - Changing The Camera - Painting Number Two
The beauty of 3D is that you can alter the shot after you've finished the painting. In this week, we go back to our basic shapes and see if we can extract another vantage point to help us present the story we need to communicate. You'll be expected to go from 3D model to basic color scheme during this week.
Week 7 - Establishing The Shot
Let's finish the shot off. Time to establish the key elements and strike the right balance between shapes and texture for our second painting.
Week 8 - Final Presentation
Turn in your final projects for group review. Time to be awesome!
Week 9 - Live In Laguna Beach (Optional)
We will be hosting Eytan Zana in Laguna Beach for a in-person lecture and portfolio review. Usually we hold these at the Laguna Art Museum. We will start at 10 AM Pacific and continue till 4 PM.
